My Philosophy
Nicol with Craig Cameron at the
Extreme Cowboy Race 3 in Sacramento |
I believe that everyone has methods and techniques that work best for them. For me, I like to combine methodologies and techniques of many outside influences. Some of my favorite clinicians are Craig Cameron, Clinton Anderson, Pat Parelli, and Ray Hunt.
I like to go to as many clinics as I can, and I love to watch shows on RFD TV. There is always something to be learned. You can pick up things from everyone including the beginner. Some of the coolest things that have been brought to my attention were from the beginner riders, because it is new and fresh to them, and they see things that often times are overlooked by long-time horse people.
I also believe STRONGLY that it is important to treat a horse like a horse. They are animals that are inquisitive and need to have free time to be outside as much as possible. I like to turn them out as much as possible, stall time as minimal as possible.

I try to understand the horses on their level and teach them to understand and work willingly on a human level. Once you show them that you are going to be teaching them, they start looking for the things you are trying to teach them. That is when the true learning begins and they really move forward.
My main goal is to get the horse and rider to begin building a great partnership riding and on the ground.

First 30 days; slow and relaxed. |
1st 30 days: Basic ground work; establish a relationship with the individual, build trust and pecking order, begin riding (the time and forward progress varies with each individual)
2nd 30 days: Continue riding, building trust and willingness. Work on refining gates and maneuverability (I am a stickler for full body riding, leg is a must). I also like to give at least 4 lessons with the horse and rider so they can learn how to communicate with each other.
3rd 30 days: Continue gate refinement; take outside on trails and/or to strange places, so horse can experience a different environment with me and then with its person. Helps get them ready for travel to different places.
Lessons: $25 Basic horsemanship
